This deal will allow Adalvo to speed up its expansion into complex biological medicines, adding to a broader biosimilars portfolio, while keeping Enzene on board as a development and manufacturing partner.

Malta-headquartered Adalvo has acquired Enzene’s romiplostim biosimilar program, referencing Amgen’s Nplate, as it accelerates its expansion into complex biological medicines. The deal adds a product targeting a reference medicine with approximately USD 1.5 billion in 2025 global sales to Adalvo’s growing biosimilars portfolio (1).

Romiplostim is used to treat adult and chronic pediatric immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a condition in which the immune system destroys platelets. The program was developed using microbial cell line technology and is described by Adalvo as aligned with its focus on high-value, complex medicines.

Enzene, an India-based biologics CDMO, developed the program and will remain responsible for development, regulatory support, and manufacturing from its GMP-approved facilities in Pune, India. The company will support filings with the U.S. FDA, the EMA, and other global regulatory bodies.

The acquisition is intended to let Adalvo offer partners biosimilars alongside its existing portfolio, with development, regulatory support, supply, and commercialization handled through one platform. Adalvo said the move extends its experience in bringing complex products to global markets into biologics.

“Biosimilars are a natural extension of Adalvo’s capabilities into complex biological medicines and an important part of our long-term growth strategy. This acquisition strengthens our portfolio with a technically sophisticated program while bringing together Enzene’s scientific and manufacturing expertise with Adalvo’s global development, regulatory, and commercial platform,” said Anil Okay, CEO of Adalvo, in a company press release (1). “We are proud to partner with Enzene, a highly respected organization with deep scientific and manufacturing expertise, and we look forward to establishing a long-term strategic relationship that extends beyond a single program.”

For Enzene, the transaction marks a further step in its transition towards a pure-play biologics CDMO model, with the company shifting its biosimilar pipeline towards commercial partners rather than retaining products for its own commercialization.

“This partnership with Adalvo is a milestone for Enzene. Having taken romiplostim from cell line development through to regulatory approval and commercial supply in India, we are entrusting a strong global partner to bring it to patients internationally, while Enzene continues as development and manufacturing partner,” added Himanshu Gadgil, CEO of Enzene, in the press release (1). “This transaction strengthens Enzene’s position as a leading global biosimilar CDMO, developing, scaling and manufacturing complex biologics for partners worldwide.”

The deal is the latest move in Adalvo’s strategy of building a differentiated portfolio through licensing, investment, and acquisition. The company said the expansion into biosimilars represents another stage in its evolution as a global pharmaceutical business focused on complex and innovative treatments across international markets.
